Our luncheon speaker was Larry L. Lee, Paseo '56.
Larry's story, in his own words, is taken from his contribution to
the 50th Reunion of the Class of 1956.
So it has been 50 years
since we marched down the aisle to see, if indeed we were going to
receive a high school diploma. It is not easy to document fifty
years including times of joys, sorrows, successes and failures that
one experiences during a lifetime.
I have lived in the Kansas City area all my life except for a brief
period living in Florida. Following Paseo High School, I received a
Associate of Arts degree from the Kansas City Junior College
located at 39th & McGee. Two years later, I graduated from
Florida Southern College located in Lakeland, Florida with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics.
My military career consisted of 6 months training and 5 ½ years in
the Kansas National Guard. I graduated from Officer Candidate
School as a 2nd lieutenant in 1963.
In 1961, I met and married Lynn McCready and we have 3 children; two
daughters and a son. My wife Lynn, the children and now
grandchildren have always been and continue to be such a wonderful
part of my life. All three children and their spouses live in Kansas
City and we enjoy their company and now the relationship with our 4
grandchildren as well.
My early career consisted of sales with Swift & Co. Campbell Soup
and Johnson & Johnson. My career then moved into Personnel (now
known as human resources) with the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas
City, United Telecom (Sprint) and Waddell & Reed. In the mid
1970’s, I established Lee & Associates, a management
consulting firm specializing in human resources issues and programs.
Subsequently the firm became Lee & Burgess Associates with
offices in St. Louis, Mo and Denver, Co. During my career I served
as President of the Human Resource Management Association of
Greater Kansas City, President of the Human Resource Research Forum,
President of the Institute of Management Consultants and served on
the Human Resource Advisory Board of the Bloch School of Management,
University of Missouri, Kansas City.
During the late 1990’s, I spent an enjoyable 3+ years working
with Bob Bernstein in his advertising agency Bernstein & Rein
Advertising helping to establish a Human Resources Department in his
growing firm. Yes, many a high school friendship can last a
lifetime. Today, Lynn and I enjoy our family being so close to us
with the opportunity to travel to places throughout the world of
which I only dreamed of during my years at Paseo. In addition, to my
family my interests include gardening, I am a Master Gardner
through the Johnson County Kansas Extension Service; management
consulting, I volunteer with the Executive Service Corps and
was named Chair of the Board of Directors for the Executive
Service Corp of Greater Kansas City in January 2006; children living
in poverty around the world, I serve on the National Board of
Directors of Children International, a $100+ million annual
budget children sponsorship organization., In addition, I serve on
the Board of Directors of 2 closely held corporations. I have served
as an adjunct professor at Avila University.
Because of previous scheduled travel commitments, I will not be able
to attend the 50th reunion of the Class of 1956. I will miss seeing
many of you again and getting caught up with your lives.
Fortunately, I have been able to attend all the previous reunions
and have fond memories of renewing old friendships and reliving days
gone by. Please stay in touch and have a great reunion celebration.
